Kung Fu Panda 4

Kicking off the list at number 25 is Kung Fu Panda 4. I know it may sound childish to some, but I have a soft spot for Po and the Furious Five. These movies blend hilarious physical comedy with meaningful messages about destiny, inner strength and friendship. The animation allows for visually stunning action sequences. And who can resist baby Po and his noodle-slurping antics? This franchise never fails to make me laugh and leave me feeling uplifted. Kung Fu Panda 4 hits theaters on March 8th.

Jee Le Zaraa

At number 24 is Alia Bhatt’s intriguing new film Jee Le Zaraa. We only got a short announcement teaser, but the premise sounds fantastic. It follows two sisters on a thrilling cross-country road trip that quickly spirals out of control. Leave it to Alia to choose such a bold female-centric storyline. And with director Farhan Akhtar at the helm, I expect strong performances and stylish visuals. Farhan has directed critical darlings like Dil Dhadakne Do and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. Jee Le Zaraa rolls into theaters on September 27th.

Mad Max prequel

Next up at number 23 is Furiosa, the highly anticipated Mad Max prequel. Any film by visionary director George Miller delivers sheer cinematic chaos. Furiosa promises dynamic vehicular mayhem on an operatic scale. Having Charlize Theron reprise her role is just icing on the cake. And pairing her with Chris Hemsworth as a villain? I already have chills. Get ready for some of the most insane practical effects and choreography ever filmed when Furiosa storms theaters on May 24th.

Chandu the Champion

In 22nd place is Chandu the Champion, starring Kartik Aaryan. This biographical film highlights the inspiring story of paralympic gold medalist Murlikant Petkar. Watching Kartik dramatize how this athlete overcame disability through sheer perseverance and willpower should make for a motivating theatrical experience. And I appreciate seeing such real-life Indian heroes immortalized on the big screen. Chandu the Champion opens in cinemas on June 14th.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3

Landing at number 21 is Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, another Kartik Aaryan blockbuster in the making. The announcement teaser has me intrigued. It hints at a new ghostly threat emerging in the haunted haveli. And Tabu is confirmed to reprise her iconic role from the first film. Kartik has proven his comedy chops and supernatural films are hot right now, so I foresee this being a box office smash when it likely releases around Diwali.

Singham Again

In 20th place is Rohit Shetty’s Singham Again, the third entry in this massively successful cop franchise. Ajay Devgn will reprise his role as the indefatigable Bajirao Singham. And this installment promises cameos from the biggest names in Bollywood including Akshay Kumar, Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and more. Shetty always delivers larger-than-life action extravaganzas, so I know audiences will flock to this one on Independence Day.

Joker: Folie à Deux

At number 19 is the highly discussed Joker: Folie à Deux. Joaquin Phoenix and Todd Phillips crafted an origin story for the ages in Joker. Seeing them reteam for a musical sequel with Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn has the internet abuzz. This creepy take on a classic Batman dynamic promises to again push boundaries when it hits theaters on October 4th, 2024.

Thangalaan

In 18th place is Thalapathy Vijay’s upcoming sci-fi thriller Thangalaan. Just the announcement poster gives off time travel vibes. I’m hearing fascinating theories that Vijay might play a triple role spanning centuries. This could be India’s answer to high concept films like Interstellar. Thalapathy films are theatrical events, so I’m excited to see how he and director Vetri Maaran imagine this genre-bending spectacle. Expect a release date sometime in late 2024.

Stree 2

At number 17 is Stree 2, the highly awaited follow-up to Amar Kaushik’s horror comedy smash hit. The first Stree subverted expectations with hilarious scares and social commentary. Rumor has it Stree 2 will include a cameo from Varun Dhawan as the werewolf referenced at the end of the first film. I appreciate how Kaushik weaves an engaging narrative around uniquely Indian myths and legends. Look for Stree 2 to again win over audiences when it comes to theaters in August 2024.

Bholaa Remake

In 16th place is Bholaa, Ajay Devgn’s remake of the 2019 Tamil hit Kaithi. This adrenaline-fueled prison escape thriller promises tons of intense action choreographed to the max. And pairing Devgn with Tabu again post-De De Pyaar De is an added bonus. With Devgn also directing, he will surely bring his trademark hard-hitting style. Bholaa is locked for release on March 30, 2024.

RC15

At number 15 is RC15, Ram Charan’s political action thriller directed by Shankar. Anyone familiar with Shankar’s filmography knows he executes high concept crowd-pleasers like nobody’s business. RC15 sees him collaborating with one of Tollywood’s biggest stars. The teaser hints at an electrifying story about frustration with government corruption. Expect RC15 to ignite the box office when it arrives in September 2024.

Indian 2

In 14th place is Indian 2, Shankar’s long-awaited follow-up to his own classic vigilante film. I’ll watch anything starring the great Kamal Haasan. Seeing him reprise the role of righteous seniors activist Senapathy has me beyond excited. If the first film is any indication, Indian 2 will deliver an urgent message about systemic injustice while showcasing Shankar’s technical prowess. This one hits theaters sometime between April and June 2024.

Hanu-Man

At number 13 is Hanu-Man, India’s first big-budget superhero universe starter. The teaser dropped on January 12th and gave us a taste of this ambitious action fantasy epic. It looks like director Aditya Dhar will incorporate themes from Hindu mythology into a massively visual effects-driven experience. And the musical score sounded incredible. I’m very intrigued to see how this shapes up when it releases later this month.

Pachinko

In 12th place is the third season of the critically acclaimed series Pachinko. Apple TV produces some of the most compelling stories across any medium. Season 1 of Pachinko hooked me with its visually stunning depiction of four generations of a Korean immigrant family. The intimate family drama is told across multiple timelines with incredible production values and a haunting score. I can’t wait to see what happens next for this unforgettable cast of characters when season 3 drops later in 2024.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

Number 11 brings Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, another visually mind-blowing chapter in this timeless sci-fi saga. The Planet of the Apes franchise remains an eternal font of thought-provoking themes about human nature and our self-destructive tendencies. Under the stewardship of visionary director Wes Ball, I expect Kingdom to deliver emotional gut-punches wrapped in absolutely painterly images. Catch this sure-to-be epic when it hits Indian theaters in November 2024.

Pushpa: The Rule

Cracking the top 10 at number 10 is Pushpa: The Rule. The first Pushpa became an absolute phenomenon thanks to Allu Arjun’s massively charismatic performance. The unique rural Telangana setting, theatrical narrative and explosive action connected with audiences everywhere. And Sukumar’s imaginative direction made even the simplest moments iconic. For The Rule, I predict ever-larger scale choreography and maybe a face-off with Fahadh Faasil’s character. My body is ready when Pushpa: The Rule throngs theaters on August 15th.

the third season: Mirzapur

In 9th place is the third season of the micro-crime drama masterpiece Mirzapur. Fans are rabid for the return of characters like Guddu, Munna, Kaleen and more. The Shakespearean family feud premise allows creators Puneet Krishna and Karan Anshuman to craft an endlessly compelling saga. And they aren’t afraid to embrace the pulpy entertainment value with guns, knives and curses galore. Mirzapur captures the complex dichotomy between small town simplicity and big crime ambition. Look for season 3 to hit Prime Video sometime in the second half of 2024.

Suriya’s gangster

At number 8 is Suriya’s gangster epic Vaadivaasal. The short teaser gave us a glimpse of Suriya’s physical transformation into an aging retired bull tamer pulled back into the fray. This period film promises massive setpieces combined with the intimate drama of characters facing their pasts and confronting mortality. Suriya is one of the most versatile leading men in Indian cinema, so I anticipate a gripping character-driven ride when Vaadivaasal charges into theaters on April 12th, 2024.

Deva Deva Naayaka

In 7th place is Jr NTR’s period romantic drama Deva Deva Naayaka. Just the poster has me hyped beyond belief. Jr NTR always pours his heart and soul into portraying iconic fictional characters. Seeing him take on a royal prince role has me giddy. Rumors also have Saif Ali Khan and Janhvi Kapoor in extended cameos. And anything directed by Rajamouli is cinematic art of the highest caliber. Part one of two arrives on April 5th, 2024.

Project K.

At number 6 is Prabhas’s genre-bending sci-fi film Project K. The working title itself hints at experimental visionary filmmaking. Reports indicate Project K will blend elements of Indian mythology, history and culture with futuristic sci-fi spectacle. Imagine Prabhas portraying a godly avatar within a mind-bending high concept setting. Pair that with an unreal cast including Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan and more. Project K promises to culminate in theatrical nirvana when it (hopefully) releases as scheduled on January 12th, 2024.

Godzilla vs Kong 2

In 5th place is Godzilla vs Kong 2 from director Adam Wingard. The crossover event of the decade gets an epic sequel that raises the monster stakes higher than ever. The trailer shines with stunning effects and worldbuilding. I love seeing Godzilla and Kong join forces to battle colossal new threats. Their tag team promises adrenaline-pumping showdowns on a scale rarely achieved. Ready your popcorn for the beastly brawl when Godzilla and Kong return to the big screen on April 11th, 2024.

the versatile Vikram

At number 4 is Thunivu starring the versatile Vikram. The teaser reveals a nearly unrecognizable Vikram inhabiting an eccentric villain/anti-hero role. Director H. Vinoth’s films always deliver uncompromising suspense and vivid characters. Vikram has made a career out of taking risks and surprising audiences. Thunivu should continue his legacy of massively fun and stylish films when it releases on January 26th, 2024.

Deadpool 3

In 3rd place is Deadpool 3, the triumphant return of my favorite non-family-friendly superhero. His first two solo outings relished in wise-cracking R-rated fourth wall demolition. Now, Deadpool gets to play in the MCU sandbox courtesy of crossover cameos. The threequel also promises introduction of the multiverse. Pair that with Ryan Reynolds’ signature motormouth snark and we have the recipe for refreshing and raunchy comic mayhem coming July 26th, 2024. Or maybe September 6th according to some rumors. The point is, shut up and give me Deadpool 3 ASAP!

KGF Chapter 2

At number 2 is KGF Chapter 2, the feverishly anticipated next installment in the KGF saga. The first chapter took all of India by storm with its bold vision, mass-appealing style and Yash’s magnetic central performance. Everything from the gritty visuals to the operatic narrative crafted an instantly iconic anti-hero in Yash’s Raja Krishnappa Bairya ‘Rocky’. Chapter 2 promises higher emotional stakes as Rocky cements his empire and confronts threats from Adheera and others. The teaser alone stimulates goosebumps. Get ready for director Prashanth Neel to again redefine mass cinema when KGF Chapter 2 manifests on January 26th, 2024.

Vikram Vedha

Finally, my most eagerly awaited 2024 release: Hrithik Roshan in Vikram Vedha. Ever since the first teaser dropped, my hype has been off the charts. Saif Ali Khan looks completely menacing as the tough cop Vikram. And Hrithik morphs into the morally ambiguous yet sympathetic gangster Vedha with an on-point beard and smoothed-out voice. Pushkar-Gayatri laid the groundwork with their inventive original film. But Hrithik elevates Vedha into his most stylishly theatrical avatar yet in this spiritual successor. The teaser alone stimulates all my senses in the best way. Vikram Vedha hits theaters October 11th, 2024. And I’ll be sitting in the front row donning a fake beard and holding a ‘HR FOREVER’ sign!

That concludes my picks for the top 25 most anticipated movies and shows released in 2024. Let me know which ones you are most excited for. The lineup promises something for every kind of movie buff. We’ll laugh, cry, hide under seats and leave theaters discussing life’s big questions. Cinema helps reflect culture while also expanding our notion of what is possible. 2024 offers epics and indies alike to inspire our imagination. Please share this list with any fellow cinephiles in your life. And support these talented Indian and international filmmakers by experiencing their visions on the big screen. This will surely prove one of the most monumental years for movies in ages.
